Witcher prequel series Blood Origin premiers in December

At today’s Tudum livestream, Netflix announced the release date for its Witcher prequel series, Blood Origin. Michelle Yeoh, Sophia Brown, Minnie Driver, and Laurence O’Fuarain discussed their characters and revealed December 25, 2022 as the premiere date for the series.

The Blood Origin saga takes place 1,200 years before The Witcher saga’s main story. This seems to be an interesting departure from the lore of the books and games where the monster hunters were created through anachronistic genetic engineering of ancient humans after the confluence of the spheres.  With the series focusing on three fey characters (Yeoh, Brown, and O’Fuarain), Blood Origin attributes the Witchers’ creation to elves.

Adding and changing to the Witcher story on Netflix has proved to be immensely successful in the past, and Blood Origin is no different with Michelle Yeoh as the elf Scian. In recent years, Yeoh has received renewed attention for her performances in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Star Trek: Discovery, but her career includes a long list of stellar dramatic performances such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as well as outstanding stunt work in Supercop, a 1992 Jackie Chan action-comedy.

I’m also excited to see Irish actor and comedian Dylan Moran, who is perhaps best known for his short-lived BBC Channel 4 sitcom, Black Books. According to IMDB, he will play a character named “Uthrok One-Nut,” so the show seems to be going well.
In the meantime, I’m looking forward to Blood Origin and CD Projekt’s distant new series of games as we await Season 3 of the main series (coming in Summer 2023) and Blood Origin.
